Working Conditions

Orthopedic surgeons mostly run their own practices or work in group practices with other orthopedic surgeons. Some work in multispecialty group practices, which means they work with physicians of various other specialties.

Surgeons work indoors, in usually clean enviroments. If its a typical day, they may spend time consulting with patients in offices and performing procedures in operating rooms. They also check on patients in the hospital rooms.

Orthopedic surgeons usually work long hours, expecially when they first start their career. Some work up to 60 hours a week! Isnt that alot? Orthopedic surgeons have to be available whenever they are needed. There are no major physical demands in this career, but however, surgeons must be prepared to stand for long periods of time in the operating rooms. Orthopedic surgeons often work as part of a team of medical professionals. For example, they work with nurses and anesthesiologists in the operating room.

A career as an orthopedic surgeon does not typically involve travel. However, some surgeons, especially those who are involved in research activities, may travel to attend conferences in varies locales.
