Earnings: $35,000 to $55,000 a year
Requirements: Bachelor's degree, Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, accepted into a residency program
Responsibilities: Working in a hospital or other medical setting; recieving extensive on-the-job training in orthopedic surgery; working under the supervision of licensed surgeons to diagnose and treat patients' conditions.
Level 2: Orthopedic Surgeon
Earning: $180,000 a year or more
Requirements: Completion of residency program, possibly certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, licensed by your state
Responsibilities: Diagnosing patients' conditions; recommending courses of treatment; answering patients' questions; performing surgery; treating patients through the use of non-surgical methods, such as exercise therapy and splints or casts; teaching orthopedic surgery residents.
Level 3: Chief of Orthopedic Surgery
Earnings: $300,000 a year or more
Requirements: Many years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon, several published articles in scholary journals
Responsibilities: Managing departmental budget; supervising, hiring, and evaluating personnel; examining and treating patients; teaching orthopedic surgery residents; supervising clinical research.
