Earning for self-employed orthopeic surgeons depend largely on the number of patients they see; they can raise their income by incrasing the number of hours they work. Earnings for orthopedic surgeons are lso affected by a number of other factors, including experience, reputation, location, and subspecialty. For instance, surgeons who specialize in working with the spine may have higher arnngs tan those who specialize in other parts of the musculoskeletal system. Median earnings for orthopedic surgeons range from about $424,000 to $642,000 a year, depending on their subspecialty. Salaried orthopedic surgeons usually recieve benefits. Dental coverage, pension plan conributions, paid vacation days, and sick days are some of the benefits.

Orthopedic surgeons must meet the same basic requirements as other physicians. The first step is to complete at least 3 years of a bachelor's degree, including several required science courses. This is the minimum requirement to enter medical school. However, becuase the admission process is very competitive, most applicants have at least a 4 year bachelor's degree, and some even have a masters degree. Medical school takes 4 years to complete. After graduating, you will be a medical doctor. Next, you must complete 5 years of residency training to become an orthopedic surgeon. Residencies are periods of practical, on-the-job training, which take place in hospitals or other medical settings.
